Marvel cave in Missouri is at the entrance to the theme park Silver Dollar City. Silver Dollar City is a simulated town set in the 1880s. You can buy pottery or baskets or go on a water ride. Pretty silly, but awesome. Especially when you are a kid. And super especially because the park was built around the entrance to a cave.
Marvel cave was first discovered in the 1500s and called the Devil’s Den. In the late 19th century miners explored it for mineral deposits, they found none but after exploring were convinced they would find marble, re-naming it Marble cave. There was no marble and it was eventually re-named Marvel cave. In the 1960s it was leased to a family who began building the theme park around it. There are obviously much more naturalistic ways in which to cave. But, can you eat molasses cookies and buy a rag doll right after touring most caves? I think not.
